The new first citizen of Barton-upon-Humber, Coun Margaret Sidell, has taken office 20 years after her mother was elected town mayor.

Coun Sidell, a member of the town council since 1998, follows her mother, the late Betty Moffatt, who served as first citizen between 1987 and 1988.Speaking at the council's annual meeting, the first held since the elections, Coun Sidell said she was looking forward to doing her best for the town.

"It is 20 years since my mother sat here, and it obviously brings back memories," she said.

Going on to thank other councillors for electing her, Coun Sidell announced there would be two beneficiaries to her charity appeal.

"The first one is Katie's Concerts, because my youngest son was a great friend of Katie," explained Coun Sidell.

"At the time Katie died, a lot of her peers were reminded they had their lives in front of them, and they should use it well."

The second charity Coun Sidell has chosen to support is the Alzheimer's Society.

"I think many of us have seen the devastating effects this can have on people's lives," she continued.

Elected to serve alongside her as Deputy Mayor was Coun Michael Osgerby, who first joined the council in 1999.
